I bought this based on other time travel romance books I've liked. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but was rewarded with a very good read, even though it was different from what I expected! To best describe this book, think: the Outlander series meets the films Inglorious Bastards with a bit of Shining Through. An epic love story arises during wartime. It's very well written and had me totally engrossed. The only things keeping this from being a 5-star for me was that I thought it wrapped up a little too quickly. This novel could have easily become a series of 2 or 3 novels that would've made for a much more epic tale across a longer period of time. The "hole in the world" was never really explained fully and there could've been more intrigue/spy stuff set up to resolve that and/or stretch out the story and bring in more sic-fi elements. The romance was wonderful (Major Harker was hot hot hot!) and the main characters had great chemistry: but not much going on with the actual SEX! :-( I don't think this was listed as being a YA novel, so I guess I just expected a little bit more within the sex scenes in an adult novel than a tame fadeout.
It's a bit of a shame, because while The UnTied Kingdom was really good, it could've become an awesome and epic tale along the lines of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. I really wanted it to be.

Amazing! This book has been nominated for Contemporary Novel of the Year by the Romantic Novelist's Association for 2012. I can completely understand why after reading it. It definitely stands apart from its competitors, especially in regards to the plot.
And this book is fascinating. It's gripping and enthralling. I could not stop reading it until I finished it because I was so eager to find out what was happening next. Without giving too much away, Eve Carpenter, is a celebrity has been, who's making a fool of herself on a tv show. She goes paragliding and ends up in a London she doesn't recognize. Major Will Harker is the man who sees her free fall into the Thames and rescues her. What follows is something you'll have to pick up the book to read.
What's just as astonishing is that this is the first book by Kate Johnson. If her debut novel is this fantastic, what other goodies does she have in store. I for one am eager to read more by her. I never expected to enjoy a book set in a parallel universe so much.
Eve Carpenter, a former singer in Grrl Power a UK pop star band, falls through a hole in time and enters a London where history has been changed.
Eve's accountant has ripped her off so Eve has been struggling for 3 years with menial jobs to pay off a huge tax debt the accountant left her with. Eve is reduced to doing Reality TV show and ends up paragliding where she falls through a hole in time and lands in the Thames. Major Will Harker saves her from drowning but Eve soon finds London and the world's history has dramatically changed. The British military thinks Eve is either insane or a spy.
Few bridges cross the Thames, military vehicles use the streets while civilians use horse drawn wagons, no one has a television, and only a few homes have telephones. Nobody knows what trains and planes are.
America is part of the French Empire. A state of martial law exists in the Untied Kingdom (UK) and men & women are conscripted for the war against France. The world has had only one World War and Germany won! The French Empire has colonized 1/3 of countries of the world and wants to annex Great Britain next. GB has rationed food, clothes, and just about everything else.
Military intelligence suggests the French are using a "computer" to track British military movements and defenses. However, no one in GB knows what a computer is, what it looks like, how it works, or what it can do. Major Harker hears Eve talk about computers and asks for her help in capturing one. In return, the army may give her a pardon if she is a spy or, at least, this may convince them she is not insane.
I bought this book on a whim and I am so, so glad that I did. It's nothing like what I normally read but it turned out to be exactly what I wanted - maybe even exactly what I needed. I'd finished the book within 24 hours and it has earnt itself a well deserved spot on my favourites shelf!
The heroine, Eve, is from our world. She's a has-been, a former celebrity who spectacularly fell from grace some years previously. While filming a show designed to humiliate has-beens, she falls through a hole in the sky and ends up in an alternate version of our reality. In this world, the UK is a 3rd world country, caught up in an endless civil war as the French Empire rules the world. Kate Johnson's imagination creating this alternate reality was amazing. I was so caught up in it all!
The world building is admirable and the bumps that Eve brings to this different world often lead to either humour or very emotionally powerful scenes as Eve has to deal with various events. The author has talent when it comes to describing the scenes to be found in this war-torn country.
The slow-burning romance between Eve and Harper is just the icing on the cake - it's what I consider the perfect romance. There's no love at first sight but growing attraction on both sides, the two characters don't rush into anything, and when it all comes to a head it's so much the better for it.
In hindsight, it would have been nice had the villain not been quite so obvious, but at the time of reading this didn't matter to me at all.
I loved this book! I'm ready to go back and read it again already. I'm sure it will remain a favourite for a long time to come.
