This is a mind-boggling mix of coincidences, the highly improbable, the completely unlikely, and the downright impossible. I realize it is fiction, but it shouldn't be such a stretch.

First and foremost, Darcy signs a £10,000 contract with a courtesan whose face he has never seen because she wears a veil and a mask. If that wasn't unbelievable enough, he kisses her, makes love to her nightly (and rather vigorously) but the veil stays in place. He takes her shopping to the most exclusive stores, walking through the most elegant parts of London, to the theater and the veil still stays on and no one seems to wonder. He even takes her--who everyone knows is his mistress--to a ball at the home of nobility and, not only is she admitted and accepted but, you guessed it, her veil is still on!

I just couldn't get into a story that is so fraught with impossibilities. I forced myself to finish it as punishment for having bought it just based on the author's name and other works--despite the fact that the preview was very upfront and let me know in no uncertain terms what the rest of the book would be like. I think I did my penance, and I hope I learned my lesson.

SPOILER ALERT:

This is what irritated me the most: not only is he completely unaware that Sofia is Elizabeth, despite the fact that he sees her dimples and her upturned nose and hears her voice, and he talks to her about his love for Elizabeth. How stupid can he be? How stupid are we supposed to be?

The Mistress Black Veil A Pride and Prejudice Vagary M K Baxley 9781449974763 Books Reviews

Before I became addicted to JAFF, I was a Jane Austen purist. I would have hated this book at that time. It would have seemed like a complete violation of everything that Jane Austen intended for her characters. However, since then, I've read hundreds of these stories and the more I read, the more I desire variety. This novel hit the spot from that standpoint. I admit, you must suspend your disbelief with this premise. It was difficult for me to imagine Elizabeth agreeing to do what she does in this book; however, the author establishes the only situation that would believably lead to Elizabeth resorting to desperate measures. The Bennett sisters are destitute as a result of their father's death and the death of nearly all of their relatives. They are living in poverty and unprotected. I love the portrayal of Elizabeth as the only one ready and willing to do whatever is needed to save her family from complete destitution. I think it very true to the essence of the original Elizabeth. I usually avoid variations that explore Elizabeth as Darcy's mistress but this one was palatable and I'll admit, even enjoyable. Warning It is the darkest variation I've read but the upside is that it made me think about the very sad state of women's rights back then....and even more sad to think that there are places in the world TODAY in which women are trapped in the same state.
First things first, this book is not for the faint of heart. It is really a vagary and deviates so far from the original storyline that purists will not enjoy it. It is also explicit in its love scenes some may fan themselves repeatedly. But those two reasons did not stop me and it has certainly become a favorite in this vast world of JAFF. I don't think the author changed the characters as much as allowed them to mature, which is logical considering the passage of time and everything that has happened. If you can suspend your P&P reality for a while, you will thoroughly enjoy this sexy, emotional, and sometimes funny story. I am so glad my Hispanic background allowed me to thoroughly enjoy Darcy and Lizzy (or Sofia's) interactions in Spanish. I really do think it made a difference since I could appreciate the sensuality being spoken at times without the need for the translation. Great story!

P.S. Gotta love Ling-Ling's character!! Loved her!!
I had such high hopes for this book, as this is a storyline I have wanted to see explored between Darcy and Elizabeth for a very long time, but it fell painfully short. I was only able to get halfway through before giving up and skimming the rest (a rarity for me!)

Although the premise of the book (Elizabeth falls on hard times and contrives to be Darcy's mistress without him knowing who she was because of both a veil and mask) is already patently ridiculous, but I could suspend my disbelief if the internal logic of the book made sense. It did not. Elizabeth, in her veiled disguise as a Spanish courtesan, is repeatedly called beautiful. Constantly. She is the talk of London's brothels even though no one has ever seen her. She only speaks in Spanish to disguise her identity, and even though everyone knows she is English, she resorts to broken English when speaking to those who don't understand Spanish. Darcy, who speaks flawless Spanish (which is also mentioned repeatedly, sometimes on the same page) is jealous and incredibly annoyed at her for not using broken English with him! What?!

Although the book seemed to be incredibly well researched in some parts, at others, not at all. Same for the editing there were many occasions when the same sentiment was repeated on the page as if the author had forgotten they'd already covered it (something to the effect of 'Elizabeth wanted to go home and have a bath after partaking of her tea. And then, if time permitted, she would bathe before dressing for the evening's entertainment.')

Also, for a book about the sordid relationship between Darcy and his mistress, the sex was very thinly drawn. Whilst I understand many JAFF fans prefer it this way, I doubt they would buy this kind of book so it surprised me.

And lastly, the Oriental maid, Ling-Ling, was such an unnecessary, offensive and shameful stereotype that I had to keep checking when the book was written - 2011! It was the main reason I gave up on the book. I couldn't take the broken English any more.
This is a mind-boggling mix of coincidences, the highly improbable, the completely unlikely, and the downright impossible. I realize it is fiction, but it shouldn't be such a stretch.
