Wool 4 The Unraveling Silo series eBook Hugh Howey
After reading Wool 1 and 2, I felt the suspense and mystery building, but both left me hungering for some action. They were great, but kept leaving my wondering what was real and not. But the important thing is I FELT. I sensed the hopelessness and monotony of lives lived inside a small locked community for hundreds of years, and wished the inevitable revolution would come soon. The author dragged me into the story and made me want more. There were parts that I had to push through. Descriptions of the lives of each tier of society living in the "Silo" was obviously dire in making the reader invest emotion for each in some way. But at times my mind went numb, and I had to re-read passages. Then Wool 3 and 4 started in on the action, and fulfilled my desire for revolution against tyranny. Mix in some faithful friends and a little romance, and the universe is complete.
Instead of reading 4 short stories, I made myself believe it was one complete book, which helped to keep me interested during the slower sections. I will suggest the Wool books to all my friends.
And now I eagerly anticipate the arrival of Wool 5...

Wool 4 The Unraveling Silo series eBook Hugh Howey Reviews
Wool pretty much captured my attention, and the next three installments did nothing to damper my enthusiasm. But each installment has gone in different directions, and it seems as if the author is growing in his already prodigious writing capabilities.
Where Wool was one of the most emotive pieces of writing I have read, Wool 4 opens up with one of the most descriptive pieces I have read. None of the author's ability to put emotions to the written word has been lost, but I think he has upped his game in describing scenes and actions. Part of that may be because there is more action in this installment, but I do think the author has also just gotten even stronger.
Of course, as the saying goes, with Wool 4, the plot thickens. As more is revealed, more questions surface. The mystery aspect of the saga has once again come to the fore.
While I am a huge fan of Wool, I do have one lingering question. My question is just how deep does the silo go? How many meters are there between floors? I keep looking for this, but I can't find it. If it takes days to walk up the stairwell, those must be some pretty big floors. I am not sure that there is a modern building on earth which would take more than an hour to climb (The Empire State Building has been climbed in just a little more than 10 minutes.)
This very minor issue makes no difference in the joy I have reading this story. Hugh Howey is a superbly skilled writer, and his story grabs the imagination like a terrier, never letting go. I am extremely eager to finish the story, but I dread it as well. I don't want this journey to be over.
When I started the first book in this series the Silo world was foreign to me, but Howey's writing made it so real. At first it's hard to figure out why they were built with 150 flights of stairs instead of an elevator. Then as the story progresses I began to understand why it was designed like that, the diabolical machinations that were behind the Silos. There are many layers to unravel and the author let's us discover them without spelling everything out for us.
This is the first one that's a full length novel so the writing style which was so crisp and sharp has changed. The story is still compelling but the writing seems now to have some time and space filler which slows down the action and holds us back from what is going to happen. Sometimes too drawn out, as there are doldrums along the way now.
As we discover a second silo it opens up so many more possibilities with the series and I want to know more. I want to know how the first people reacted to being in the silos and how their societies developed along the way. The genius of creating a world where there are 50 possibilities for variations. I want to know about them all.
First of all I'm going to say this book makes way more sense when you don't read Wool 5 first (Yes, I totally did that by accident). Try to keep in mind through this review that I read 4 and 5 out of order so my opinion is a little skewed but I'm trying to review it as if I didn't already know what was going to happen.
This is definitely the highest action in the whole series!! The characters are just so rich! It's amazing that Hugh can take these short novellas and introduce so many new characters and not once leaving you feel bombarded by useless filler.
I love the simultaneous stories going on in this book, not just between the silos but also within the silo! After reading this book of the series you really get a better understanding of Bernard (I think that's his name, I'm sorry it's been a while since I read this) and what kind of person he is, which I would term as maybe semi-villain? He has his reasons which are hard to dismiss but with two completely different movements happening within the Silo you kind of have to make a stand and decide whose side you're going to take. It's scary because you honestly have to wonder what you would do in that situation. I can't even begin to imagine being in that kind of world even though it's completely reasonable given the state our World is in.
Again, great action! I love getting to know the mechanics and all the other characters from the "down deep". It is really fascinating to get to see how all the different people in the Silo are essential to their ongoing existence. Without everyone working in unison the whole thing will crumble!
If you've made it this far into the series then you already know how awesome it is. Keep going, it just gets better!
